Who do I vote for?

The local election is my opportunity to send my personal dream team to the city council and the district committee. This is important, because these people decide, for example, where the money from the city budget is distributed and also elect other offices on your behalf, such as the heads of the administration (the spokesperson). I vote for the Lord Mayor directly. Only those who represent my concerns and best advance my vision for Munich lead my team.

Does Munich's Lord Mayor ride a skateboard?

The Lord Mayor shapes the face of the city and has a say in almost everything that happens in Munich. Everything lands on the Lord Mayors desk whether it be the traffic lights or a skateboard site in the park. And so the head of the city spices up the city’s politics with the topics that are important to him or her. This could be housing policy, rehearsal rooms or skateboard sites. In addition, the Lord Mayor directs the city council and the administration.

What does the district committee decide upon?

The 25 Munich district committees are anything but toothless tigers. They are a special feature of Munich that connects the politicians in the Town Hall directly with the citizens in the city districts. If, for example, it is a question of preserving trees in the city districts or building a bicycle parking garage, the district committee can have a say in this. For citizens, the members of the district committees are direct local contacts. For the city council, they are like a network of ambassadors. And of course, the Munich women elect their direct contact person directly.

In Munich Town Hall, the city council (together with the Lord Mayor) decides. In addition, the city council represents the citizens in the Town Hall by checking the work of the Administration and the Lord Mayor. The city council is also directly elected by the Munichers. And since there is no five percent hurdle for city council members, every vote counts – in the truest sense of the word.
